Based on daily precipitation data sets of Leizhou Peninsula during 1984-2013, comparison between effective drought index (EDI) and standardized precipitation index (SPI) was performed in this paper. And then the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought events in different sea - sons. The results indicate that daily EDI and SPI for six-months time scale (SPI-6) are more suitable for drought monitoring in Leizhou Peninsula. Moreover, the EDI is more accurate than the SPI-6 in monitoring severe drought and short-term drought. The frequency of drought in autumn and winter show a decrease trend, while the frequency of moderate and severe drought in summer showna significant increase trend. Spatially, the fre - quency of drought in spring decrease from north to south, and the high-frequency areas of severe drought are located in northwest region, while the areas with high-frequency drought in summer are distributed in the central and west coastal areas. In autumn, the frequency of drought in south is generally higher than that in north. And the stations with severe droughts in winter are mainly in the west coastal areas and the junction region of Leizhou City and Xuwen County.
