Abstract:This paper describes the main achievements of the hydrological information and forecasting in Chinasince 1949. At present, there are about 8000 hydrometric stations all over the country to collect and transmit hy-drological information. Automatic measurement and transmission systems have been established on 25 importantreaches of flood prevention and 150 large reservoirs. Remote measurement stations amounts to about 2000 . The hy-drological inforznation departments of the 22 provinces and the 7 basin organizations have transmitted hydrologicalinformation each other through computer wide area network. In hydrological forecasting techniques, we developedmany the models with Chinese characteristics. With computer widely used, the Water Resources Information Centerestablished initial information service system of precipitation and water regime, including refetring to hydmlogicalinformation, monitoring real-time nood information, display and retrieval of weather satellite images and precipitationinformation, and hydrological forecasting systems. The paper suggests that in construction of water information pro-jects, radar measurement of precipitation, satellite telemetry and GIS etc. should be used for gaining more hydro-logical and meteorological data. Researching of the drought and semi-drought area hydrological forecasting modelsshould be strengthened to develop the systems fitting the natural characteristics of China.
