Factor analysis was applied in the evaluation of surface water quality of Jiuquan district,Gansu province.It was found that the main pollutants were nonmetallic substances such as petroleum,ammoniac nitrogen etc.Heavy metal compound such as zinc,cuprous and hexachromic compounds were the secondly important pollutants.It was found that there were differences in the water quality of selected surface water area.
